Easter Vac Update!

It may be the Easter Vac but SEHBC has not stopped! We had incredible club representation at Boat Race Week. Starting off the week with the spares races on Wednesday, Toby Whitehead narrowly lost the lightweight men’s spare pair race after a quick start, and Verity Black coxed her women’s spare 4 crew to a fantastic win, rowing through Cambridge in the second half of the race!

The lightweight boat races took place on Friday with Erika Dutton and Adam Pattenden in 7 seats of their respective crews. The lightweight women produced an epic race, clawing back Cambridge’s early advantage to within a second at the Chiswick Steps, before Cambridge used their final corner advantage to take the win. The lightweight men put in an incredible effort, stabilising their margin after a quick start from Cambridge but unfortunately finishing a few lengths down. We are exceptionally proud of our athletes for their efforts for OUBC and look forward to welcoming them back for Summer Eights!

Our men’s crew hard at work training on the Cam

Meanwhile, our main squad of rowers headed to Cambridge for a training camp hosted by our sister college, Fitzwilliam. Both our novices and returning rowers had the most water time they’ve seen all year, and great progress was made by all our athletes, including a few newer coxes! It was a great opportunity to catch up on water training and integrate together as a club. Thanks to our hosts, in particular Tony Moule and Daan Timmers for their help in organising a fantastic few days for SEHBC.

A particular thanks to all our alumni for their funding, which allowed us to subsidise the training camp and enable all our athletes to attend. If you’d like to know more about donating to the Friends of SEHBC, click the button in the top right of this page!

Now the club comes back together to prepare for the main event of the year, Summer Eights! This will take place on 22-25 May, and this year may be a big one, with our women starting 2nd on the river and gunning for headship for the first time in 15 years!

Any support is always encouraged, particularly on the Saturday, when we will host our usual charity BBQ in aid of Bone Cancer Research Trust in memory of Matt Greenwood. Get in touch at president@sehbc.org if you’d like to be involved!
